2008 Nominated by the Department of Dance for the University of Iowa President and Provost Award for Teaching Excellence, award given to instructors demonstrating sustained high level of teaching excellence.

SCHOLARSHIP

Creative Works (Choreography and Performance)
The primary areas of research are 1) original choreography in the form of concert dance works, choreography for musicals and theatre 2) the research of traditional Afro-Cuban dance and drumming forms and the creation and arrangement of Afro-Cuban dance works 3) dance restaging of the Repertory of David Berkey and 4) performance.

2008 Choreography for Ripple, a 9 minute quartet dance to the music of Sigur Ros drawing on the oceanic photography of Steve Hawk to explore the dynamics of human relationships. Performance at the Faculty/Graduate Concert at Space Place Theatre, Iowa City, February.

Choreographer for Little Shop of Horror, a musical produced by Cornell College performed at Kimmel Theatre, Mount Vernon, IA February.

2007 Recreation of Diplomacy, a twelve minute sextet dance to the music of Kodo, commissioned by 940 Dance Company, Lawrence, KS. Performance at the Lawrence Performance Arts Center and in the touring rep. October.

Choreographer for The Long Christmas Ride Home, written by Paula Vogel, music composed by Don Chamberlain, a coproduction of Cornell College and Riverside Theatre, with performances at Cornell and Riverside. Creation of choreography for two major scenes and involvement in general movement throughout. One scene telling the Christian nativity story with elements of Noh Theatre, using actors, dancers and three puppets from the Bunraku puppet theatre tradition. Choreographer and performer of Elegua, Ogun, Oshun, Makuta, Rumba Yambu, and Arara (Afrekete) six dances including solo, duet and group work, each about 7 to 10 minutes from the Afro-Cuban tradition, for the UI Afro-Cuban Drum & Dance Ensemble for the touring repertory, including performances at the Space Place Theatre, Iowa City, October and the Iowa Central Community College December.

Choreographer of Meaningless Variations on no Particular Theme, a 12 minute group work to the music of Murcof, as of yet, a 7 minute duet to the music of Edgar Meyer, and a recreation of Serenade for Goodbye, a duet to Mozart for the Jennifer Kayle/Daniel Stark Concert at the Space Place Theatre, Iowa City, June.

Choreographer of Incompleteness Theorem, a six minute solo inspired by the work of mathematical Kurt Gödel to the music of Radiohead is set on Jennifer Kray as part of her MFA Thesis, and performed at April’s Own April Graduate Thesis Concert at Space/Place Theater, Iowa City, April.

Choreographer for Earth: Healing the Rift, a unique performance sponsored by the Gallmann Memorial Foundation of Kenya, hosted by the Great Rift Valley Trust, and taking place at the Laikipia Nature Conservancy. Under the direction of Monica Maimone of Studio Festi (recently directed the opening ceremonies of the XX Winter Games in Torino 2006) the performance is a collaboration of artists from Africa, Brazil, Greece, India, Japan, Russia, U.K., U.S. and elsewhere. A list of some of the artist involved include: Clara Weston, classical dancer; Aszure Barton, contemporary choreographer with Aszure & Artists, dance company; Alan Sener, modern choreographer; Adrian Brendel, cellist; Hayden Chisolm, saxophonist; Paul Cunliffe, percussionist; Sophie Barker, singer and songwriter; Ayub Ogada, singer; Pantelis Pavledis, lyre player; Zac Greening and the Earth Energy Project, visual artist. Spring 2008 Director and Choreographer, UI Afro-Cuban Drum & Dance Ensemble, touring performance group in collaboration with the UI School of Music, with several lecture/demonstrations, residencies and performances in area schools, museums and theatres, included as part of the University of Iowa’s Arts Share program. Duties include budget management, touring coordination, repertory selection, casting, scheduling, research, choreography and involvement in all areas of management and production. Program includes 60 students.
